What Is A Drug Allergy?

Written on June 9, 2008

Having a drug allergy can be dangerous. You may wander what this is. A drug allergy is going to happen when your immune system overreacts to something in a medicine. This will cause what is called an allergic reaction. There are other drug allergies that can be life threatening and most of them are mild and the symptoms go away within a few days after you discontinue the use of the medicine.

Drug allergies may go away as time goes on but once you have an allergic reaction to a drug, you will usually always be allergic to that drug or others that are similar. A drug reaction can be harmful. The symptoms and treatments are going to be different and it is important for your doctor to find whether you have a drug allergy or another type of adverse reaction. Adverse reactions are not usually anything to be concerned about. They are not that serious.

The symptoms of a drug allergy will be different from mild to life threatening. There are different reactions for different people and different drugs. Hives, rashes, blisters or welts can start the reaction. These are all the most common symptoms of drug allergies. Coughing, wheezing, runny nose and hard time breathing can also be considered for many drug reactions.

Stomach cramps, and feeling sick like you are going to vomit or have diarrhea can be associated with having a drug allergy. Anaphylaxis is the most serious reaction. It is also going to be life threatening and you will need to have emergency treatment. The symptoms usually appear within 1 hour after you take the medicine and will include hives and a hard time breathing as well. Some people will even go into shock.

Usually any medicine can cause an allergic reaction. However, penicillin is the cause of most drug allergies. If you have an allergic reaction to a medicine, you may be allergic to a medicine that someone else is not. Every person is going to be different and it will depend on what types you are taking and how your body is going to react.

The best thing to do is make sure that you are not allergic to the medicine before you take it. You may want to be careful when you are taking it just in case. This means that you will want to take it in little doses and make sure that your body is going to react in the way that it should. It is going to be something that may save your life in the end. It is going to be something that you should think about every time you get a prescription for any reason.
