Live a Life Without Limits - How Big is Your Pond?
Written on August 25, 2008
Whether you are flipping hamburgers at some unknown fast food store in the middle of nowhere, or you're about to receive an Ivy League College degree, you were fashioned for greatness.
Yes, I believe there is somebody great in each one of us. Somebody who is destined to be a blessing, to impact other lives, to change the world, and to leave a legacy on this planet.
If you have made Jesus the Lord of your life, you are a child of God, and this kind of life is not beyond your reach anymore. You have been marked for success by God Himself, and you are empowered to prosper and succeed.
Does this thought resemble the picture you had of your future? Are you feeling challenged to step out and set higher goals than you have until now? I hope so. Because you can do it.
There are no limits to what God can do in our lives. If we let Him. Our limitations are self-imposed, and they only exist in our mind. The Bible says: "What a man thinks, so he is." (Proverbs 23:7)
Whatever thoughts you are feeding your mind with today will determine where you are going to be tomorrow.
My son has a turtle. He got her for his birthday about five years ago, and she came in a little aquarium. She was really tiny and cute back then.
As time went by she started to grow, and soon we had to purchase a bigger aquarium. Of course, she kept on growing. So today, and 3 aquariums later, she is living in a huge plastic tub.
Somewhere along the way I started to get worried. Pictures of giant turtles crawling around our house were starting to haunt my mind.
So finally we did some researching, and found out that these turtles could really get huge, but, if you limited their living space, they would stop growing.
Now that's interesting! It made me think about how the world is crowded with creatures that are limited by their surroundings and the influences they expose themselves to. They are called human beings.
And the vast majority of them live at a much lower level than what they were created for.
What is holding them back? What is limiting their growth?
Basically, it is the information they are feeding their mind with. Our environment is constantly bombarding us with messages of fear, failure and mediocrity.
Here is only some of them:
"Life is hard, enjoy it while you can; get your feet on the ground; you're just a dreamer; some people are lucky, others are not; you can't do it; you'll never achieve anything...and so on."
That is not what the Bible says about you. Whom are you listening to?
Throughout your whole life you have been exposed to good and bad information. This knowledge has framed your mind-set. It has made you think the way you think today, and is determining the decisions you are making for your tomorrow.
Here are a few questions you can ask yourself to see what you are being exposed to daily:
- It is easy to tell what is in your mind by listening to what comes out of your mouth. Are you poor-mouthed and shallow?
- What are the people that surround you daily telling you? Are they always talking about how bad things are, and how difficult life is?
- Who is your mentor?
- Is he or she an inspiring role model?
- What voices are you exposing yourself to? The media, the bad news, the frivolities of life? Or the Good News, the absolute Truth of the Word of God?
- Your preacher. Does he teach you about the abundant life Jesus bought for you? Or is he telling you you're just a wretched sinner saved by grace?
Let us be brutally honest with ourselves, and assess where we are at, find out where we have missed it, and make the necessary changes to develop our God-given talents.
Let us de-clutter our life from unnecessary things, and ask God for wisdom to peal away all the damaging influences that we have allowed to invade our lives.
The Bible tells us to "enlarge the place of our tent, and to stretch out the curtains of our dwellings. Do not spare. Lengthen your cords, and strengthen your stakes." (Isaiah 54:2)
I would add: "Get out of the aquarium and go find yourself a big pond, - make that a lake."
Refuse to be limited. It should be impossible for anybody to convince you that you are not blessed. God is with you, and that is the best success formula that has ever existed.
