Allergies and Asthma - Choosing the Best Home Air Purifier to Protect You and Your Loved Ones

Written on July 3, 2008

Allergies and asthma affect nearly one out of four Americans. Sadly, the percentage of us affected by these conditions increases each year. A good air purifier in your home can help, but unfortunately a significant number of individuals suffering from allergies and asthma do not realize how important it is to choose the correct air purifier for their home.

Some purifiers actually have been shown to not be effective at all. Each house does contain contaminants, which may not be too dangerous, unless you are someone with a respiratory problem or allergies. For anyone living with pets or smokers, the amount of bacteria throughout the home drastically increases. Choosing a good air purifier can help alleviate some of these problems, especially since there are often more pollutants indoors than outdoors.

There are five different types of air purifiers:

Filters: Clean air by passing through a filter to remove particles, which are normally part of a heating or cooling system. This type of purifier is good to help prevent damage from the furnace.

HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Air): The filter can consist of any material as long as it meets this standard -- penetration of less than 0.03 percent of particles 0.3 micrometers in size or larger. This type of purification system can only offer a specific amount of airflow through it.

Ionizing Purifiers: These air purifiers use a method called corona discharge to create charged molecules called ions. This causes particles of opposite charges to be drawn to each other and settle out of the air.

Ozone Generator: These are designed to alter molecules of oxygen and turn them into ozone, a molecule made up of three oxygen atoms. Manufacturers of these devices claim that the ozone deodorizes and disinfects the air.

Ultra Violet Radiation: Some air purifiers feature a UV light that bathes the air as it passes through, eliminating the potential harm of airborne bacteria and viruses.

A recent statistic has shown that Americans spend an annual amount of $250 million dollars on air purifiers each year. Thankfully, a variety of air purification systems are available so that you can chose the one that is best for you.

A Variety of Air Purifiers are Available

The Airfree Purifier comes in two different models ranging from $199.99 to $239.00 that differ in the features that are included: the P1000 and the Platinum 2000. The main difference between the two is that the Platinum 2000 covers more square footage of space.

The NeoAir air purifier line has also been tested as a great purification system. If you like to travel, the NeoAir Cruiser Air Purifier can protect you and your family from pollutants in your RV, Cars, Trucks or Van, while drawing its power from the cigarette lighter. Although it is very compact, it does cover about 170 sq. feet. The NeoAir Enviro 68108 has the technology for five different cleansing systems. This model uses both HEPA and Ionic discharge to eliminate particles. The NeoAir Enviro Plus is more unique, using a SuperHEPA filter, which offers twice as much filtering for the smallest particles. This powerful model has 4 purification processes including a pre-filtering shield and an exclusive O.F.S filtration to protect against the worst molds and fungi. This model also has a timer control and a fan speed indicator.

For purification in a single room, dorm room, or office, the Bell & Howell Ionic Whisper Air Purifier is a compact and affordable solution that purifies air in spaces up to 300 square feet. It is whisper quiet, costs pennies a day to run, and never requires a replacement filter.

All of these models have been tested to successfully eliminate 99.9% of airborne mold spores, bacteria, viruses, dust mite and other airborne allergens, and are great for helping with asthma and other respiratory illnesses. Because many of them are non-returnable, always make sure to do your research when choosing an air purifier for your home to ensure you get the model that best suits your individual needs.
